Pernicious gossip can initiate and feed a long, cruel social death. Recipients and repeaters of gossip often fail to consider the motives of the originators, or the consequences of repeating it. Does the gossip come from a place of concern for the person(s) gossiped about, or is it a sneaky, cowardly form of retaliation borne of narcissistic injury, or is it, perhaps a preemptive strike to cover for the indiscretions of the gossiper?
Whether outright lies, partial truths, twisted facts, or salacious snapshots from a much larger story, presented and repeated in absence of context or linked to unrelated events, gossip with malice intent can destroy lives, dreams, careers, cherished relationships, reputations, and dignity.
Putting a price on such things seems nearly impossible. That’s what defamation attorneys are for.
